PGWP extension news for international students in 2022

On April 22, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser officially made the announcement related to PGWP extension to help international graduates stay in Canada longer.

The new policy will allow eligible Post-Graduate Work Permit holders to apply for the additional open work permit and stay in Canada for up to 18 months after their current PGWP expires. At the beginning of this summer, international students who have their PGWP expires in the period from January to December 2022 can qualify for this program. This special occasion only happens this year because of COVID-19 restrictions, otherwise, under normal circumstances, PGWP is not extendable or renewable.

The new measure benefits thousands of PGWP holders

Based on IRCC’s data (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), there will be 95,000 PGWPs expire in 2022 so 50,000 people can benefit from this new measure. The intention of the PGWP extension is to help PGWP holders stay in Canada longer, gain more experience and have a better chance to apply for permanent residency.
